Metalizing is a commercial process in which a coating or layer of vaporized metal is sprayed onto a surface area to be remachined down to size. This is very useful for seal surfaces where you do not want to get any "air bubbles" that you might, if the surface was welded. It is also very helpful to metalize a bearing surface on a long shaft, because welding that same area could cause the shaft to bend. Below are some pictures of the process of metalizing  a shaft's bearing surface.  Pete Sr. is doing the metalizing.
